Tasmania Nears Capacity for Skilled Migration Nominations
13 March 2026
Tasmania has released an update on its Skilled Migration State Nomination Program as the 2025–26 program year moves into its final quarter.
High demand for state nomination has resulted in most of the available places already being allocated. While a small number of positions remain, Tasmania will scale back new invitations in the coming weeks as priority is given to assessing applications that are already lodged. Registrations of Interest (ROIs) can still be submitted during this period.
Further information about the program will be provided once the Australian Government confirms Tasmania’s nomination allocation for the 2026–27 program year.
Subclass 491 – Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa
Invitation rounds for Subclass 491 will continue across all pass categories, although fewer invitations will be issued as the program approaches its annual limit.
Subclass 190 – Skilled Nominated Visa
For the Subclass 190 visa, invitations have been temporarily suspended for candidates whose ROIs do not hold a Gold pass. New ROIs may still be lodged while the state reviews the situation in the coming weeks.
Applicants with a Green pass are expected to receive invitations within six months of lodging their ROI. However, even if their application is approved, there may not be sufficient nomination places remaining for the current program year.
BREAKING: Australia Scraps Concurrent Lodgment for Subclass 407 Training Visas
In a move to further curb "permanent temporariness" in the migration system, the Australian Government has implemented a fundamental change to the Training visa (subclass 407) application process, effective 11 March 2026.
The Migration Amendment (Training Visas—Sponsorship Requirements) Regulations 2026 officially ends the era of "concurrent lodgement," forcing a strict sequential processing model on employers and trainees.
The New "Step-by-Step" Requirement
Previously, applicants could lodge their sponsorship, nomination, and visa applications simultaneously. As of today, this is no longer permitted. To make a valid application, the following sequence is now mandatory:
Step 1: The employer must apply for and receive formal approval as a Temporary Activities Sponsor.
Step 2: The employer must lodge and receive formal approval for the specific Training Nomination.
Step 3: Only once both approvals are in hand can the trainee lodge their Subclass 407 visa application.
Warning: Any 407 visa application lodged on or after 11 March 2026 without a prior approved nomination will be deemed invalid. The Department will refund the application fee, but the applicant will not be granted a Bridging Visa.
Australia Doubles Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485) Fees to AUD 4,600
International graduates in Australia face a significant financial hurdle as the federal government officially doubled the application fee for the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). Effective 1 March 2026, the base application charge for primary applicants has jumped from AUD 2,300 to AUD 4,600.
The change, which was implemented via a last-minute legislative instrument, has caught many students off guard, with no transitional grace period provided for those currently preparing their applications.
However, in line with Australia's diplomatic commitments, citizens of Pacific Island nations and Timor-Leste are exempt from the 100% hike. Applicants holding valid passports from countries including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, and Tonga will continue to pay the lower pre-March rates.
Changes to Administrative Review Tribunal Passed by Parliament
Parliament has passed the Administrative Review Tribunal and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2025, with the legislation approved by both Houses on 5 February 2026. The new rules will start on a date set by the government, or automatically six months after the Bill receives Royal Assent.
The changes make it easier for the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART) to decide some cases without holding a face-to-face hearing. In certain situations, the Tribunal will be able to make decisions based only on written information, such as application forms and written submissions. This will happen where a hearing is not needed to properly decide the issues and where all parties have had a fair chance to provide their information in writing.
The amendments also affect some migration review cases. Reviews of student visa refusals and some temporary visa decisions will now be decided on the paperwork only, without an oral hearing. Over time, the government may add more temporary visa types to this paper-based review process through changes to the Migration Regulations.
Importantly, the changes do not apply to permanent visa or protection visa cases. These matters will continue to be reviewed under the existing processes.
